Microlight aircraft flights and hot-air balloon rides are another of the diverse adventures in store for Chiang Mai visitors. Balloon Adventure and Chiang Mai Sky Adventure are the two principal operators of these genres of activity. Both operate from bases in the rural areas to the east of the Old City and well away from the fight paths of commercial aircraft taking off and landing at Chiang Mai International Airport.
The two only operate on good weather days and note on their websites that they do not fly in bad weather for safety reasons. The pilots who fly the microlight aircraft and the balloons are certified and have many years of experience under their belts. The two activities are offered as package tours with round-trip transportation from Chiang Mai, drinks and flight certificates included.

Chiang Mai Sky Adventure is a one-stop operator of microlight flights and balloon rides. When the company was founded in the late 1990s it was the first to offer microlight flights in Thailand. Skilled pilots are at the controls for introductory flights in the locality of Mae Kuang Dam. The flights give bird’s eye views over the unspoilt landscapes surrounding the reservoir. Apart from in bad weather, microlights take off every morning with pick-up times of 06:00 in Chiang Mai. The maximum weight for passengers is 95 kilogrammes. The tour includes hot and cold drinks. Transport is free for two or more passengers.
Sky Adventure’s hot-air balloon rides are also early morning and come with similar Chiang Mai pick-up times to the microlight tours. The firm’s pilots say passengers always enjoy the thrill of drifting high above the trees, lakes and farms of the area. Depending on wind conditions, the balloon ride itself is up to 90 minutes long. A champagne breakfast marks the balloon’s arrival back on terra firma.
