Yoga and Tai Chi exercises, meditation and wellness practices originated in Asia. Modern Yoga is a derivative of Indian meditation which has been tweaked over the past couple of centuries so that it exercises the body as well as the spirit. The slow-moving exercises millions of Chinese do every morning have changed little since Tai Chi began life as a martial art in historic times.

Freedom Yoga is a studio situated on a side soi off Kampangdin Road and 10 minutes’ walk from Thapae Gate. Freedom operates classes every day of the week between 10:00 and 18:00 which cater to all levels from novice to advanced. The novice course covers the basic exercises and postures and gives insights into how Yoga can improve your life. Private classes and teacher training are on offer here too. The Body & Mind Healing Centre is located on the south side of the Old City and two minutes on foot from Bumrungburi Road and the moat. It offers training courses in Yoga and Tai Chi as well as chi kung and reiki healing. The Yoga taught here is hatha and classes focus on synchronising breath, mind and inner self. Tai Chi courses are themed on the wu style and concentrate on coordinating the body and mind plus building patience and equanimity. Located across from the south side of the moat around the Old City, Mahasiddha Yoga offers tuition by approved Federation of Yoga and Meditation instructors. Mahasiddha features a range of learning options including private classes, group classes and intensive tantra workshops on Saturdays. China-born Sam Hong Sheng (AKA Sam Wang) was brought up on Tai Chi and taught by experienced practitioners. He is now Chinese Sports Bureau certified and offers a full assortment of Tai Chi courses via Tai Chi Chuan Chiang Mai. Sam teaches Tai Chi Yoga, breathing, mediation and massage at two locations, Suan Buak Haad Park and a studio at the Hillside 4 Condominium building on Huay Kaew Road.

Tai Chi Meditation in Movement offers courses designed to provide the basic techniques and essential postures needed for Tai Chi novices to be able to go home and perform exercises for the benefits of the mind, body and spirit. Intensive 10-day, 50-hour courses start at the beginning of the month and shorter eight day ones in the middle. All tuition takes place at the centre’s Naisuan House. This is located in a residential neighbourhood to the east of the River Ping. There are a few guest-rooms onsite for those who prefer peace and to concentrate on their Tai Chi course.
