Chiang Mai’s choice of German restaurants is varied. The Bier Stube was Chiang Mai’s original German restaurant three decades ago. It still occupies the same premises on the Old City side of the moat and is just two minutes on foot from Thapae Gate. Tasty schnitzels, wurst sausages and pepper steaks with pommesfrites offer a taste of Germany. This cheap and cheerful establishment is also noted for its Thai food, pancakes and fruit juices.

Chiang Mai Breakfast World is the onsite restaurant at the Thapae Gate Lodge and is five minutes’ walk away from Bier Stube. This eatery features a collection of all-day breakfasts from around the world featuring German cold cuts, sausages, cheeses, eggs and potatoes. Deutsches fruhstuck (German breakfast) and heisse pfannen (the hot breakfast pan) are perfect before a day’s sightseeing or a night out in the town.

The Teak Baan Sakthong is located close to nightlife central on Loi Kroh Road. This attractive teak house and gardens is a relaxing location to enjoy prime steaks, roast schweinshaxe ham hock and classic German desserts. The Green Fox is a convivial beer house and restaurant two kilometres south of the Night Bazaar. Auf der Au is situated on the road out to Lamphun and is 12kms from the Old City. The Auf der Au serves traditional German cuisine including an assortment of soups, schnitzels, salads and desserts. The Sunday buffets here offer excellent value for money. The chance of sampling Paulaner Hefeweizen beer almost makes the trip to the Auf der Au a pilgrimage.

Diners looking to sample authentic German cooking will be delighted with Sangsuma. Pork knuckle, sausages, sauerkraut and even the mustard tastes as good as anything served in a gaststatte or gasthaus in Germany. Bottles of weiss beer and a classic retro style décor featuring vintage furniture serve to boost the feeling. Sangsuma is located 100 metres down a soi leading off the city’s outer ring road and just down from Mee Chok Plaza.
