The 2019 edition of the Chiang Rai Singha Park Balloon Festival is all set to launch on Wednesday. The entertainment extravaganza will run for five days, between the 13th and 17th February, and will feature balloon flights, balloon light shows, fireworks displays, music from top Thai artistes and traditional Khon dance performances.
The highlight of the annual festival is the spectacle of vibrantly coloured balloons floating aloft against a backdrop of soaring mountain crags. Singha Park’s press release says the balloons will be coming from 15 different countries. There is live music on all five days of the fest and the likes of Jesse Mek, Hugo, Songkran x Zani, Polycat, and J Jetrin are scheduled to make appearances.
Khon dances will be staged on the park’s main field arena. The 14th is Valentine’s Day and couples looking for an unusual venue or occasion to tie the knot can do so on a balloon. A multitude of different activities over the five days will give attendees the chance of winning a slice of the THB500,000 prize money up for grabs.
The deadline for the sale of advanced tickets expired on the 6th of February. This is not a problem anyway as the cost of day-tickets at the gate is just THB100. People planning to attend can pre-purchase tickets at multiple locations in Chiang Rai which include the Grand Vista Hotel, Amarin Resort, Happynest Hostel and coffee shops plus the Singha Park Shop.
Singha Park is about 15kms from Chiang Rai’s landmark clocktower and about four kilometres from Wat Rong Khun, AKA the White Temple. The What’s Up Chiang Rai Getting Around Guide has information about transport options as far as the White Temple. During the festival, tuk-tuk and taxi drivers are usually on hand for trips to the park. Hiring a taxi or a self-drive hire car via Rentalcars.com are alternate transportation options.
