A senior municipal official in Chiang Mai has extended an open invitation for one and all to attend a countdown festival on New Year’s Eve. The party at the Three Kings Monument plaza will start at 19:00 and continue through until after midnight and the beginning of 2018. The countdown to the New Year is scheduled to kick off at 23:50 on the 31 December.
Deputy-mayor Sunthorn Visasanti said the countdown party was being launched with the slogan ‘staying safe without alcohol’. In the run-up to midnight and the New Year, visitors will be able to enjoy the spectacle of cultural and musical performances. These include sword dances, old Lanna style traditional dance and live music from celebrated Thai fusion band Vietrio.
The Three Kings square’s six-metre-high Christmas is being left up to add to the air of festivity for the big night. Despite the lack of alcohol at the countdown party itself there will be no shortage of nearby bars open at which to grab some liquid refreshment. There will be some fireworks too, but the Central Festival Mall’s fireworks displays are expected to be brighter. The mall is another great Chiang Mai venue to see in the New Year.
