Laos Prepares for Launch of Online Visa Application System

The launch of an online application system for tourist visas to visit Laos is on track according to insiders at the nation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The system is set for launch during the course of next month. It will enable passport-holders from eligible nations to pre-apply for single entry e-visas with a validity of 30 days.

When the MOFA first released news of the e-visas, the report stated that the exact list of eligible nations had not yet been finalised but was expected to include the European Union, The US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It also noted that the application form was expected to be similar to the ones used when applying for visas-on-arrival or visas at Laos embassies and consulates worldwide.

Applicants for Laos e-visas will have to supply their names, addresses, passport numbers and planned travel itineraries. The MOFA did not give details as to how the fees for the visas would be collected or whether there would be any additional fees for the convenience of the service. Cambodia’s MOFA, for example, charges an extra US$6 for e-visas.

The MOFA for Laos notes that all requirements, eligibility and costs will be announced when the system goes live in June 2019. The portal for e-visa applications will be Visa Laos and updates as they are announced, including details of the official launch date, will be posted on that website.
