Chiang Mai’s 2019 Loy Krathong Festival celebrations will begin in the evening on the 9th of November and finish with the usual signature grand parade on the 12th. On the latter three evenings, Yee Peng-Loy Krathong lanterns will light up strategic points around the Old City’s moat and walls.
At 18:00 on the 9th, the plaza at the Three Kings’ Monument is the venue for ceremonies to light candles and traditional dance performances featuring a troupe of 500 dancers. The official opening ceremony for Chiang Mai’s 2019 Loy Krathong Festival will start at the same time on the following evening at Thapae Gate. Anusarn Market and Thapae Gate will be the settings for the likes of the Mister and Miss Yee Peng Contest, and a lantern procession on the evenings of the 10th and 11th.
The eagerly awaited Loy Krathong Grand Parade will take place on the evening of the 12th. The first float will set off at 19:00 and lead the way up Thapae Road from Thapae Gate, pass through Witchayanon Road and onwards to the Chiang Mai Municipality. A fireworks display scheduled for later the same evening will lend a brilliant backdrop to the night sky above Chiang Mai Municipality Hall and the River Ping.
On the evenings of the 11th and 12th, two essential Loy Krathong activities will take place. These are the launch of miniature krathong boats and viewing the launch and subsequent flights of komloy sky lanterns.
