Over the past couple of decades, Chiang Mai has evolved into one of the more popular Asian cities to ring in the New Year. Colourful fireworks displays, the unique spectacle of komloy sky lanterns drifting across the starry sky, a good choice of venues to celebrate at, and the Thai sense of sanook (fun) are key factors which have spurred this popularity.
Chiang Mai will be welcoming 2020 with countdown parties at the usual focal locations around Three Kings’ Monument and at Chiang Mai CentralFestival Shopping Mall. The River Market, right beside the iconic Iron Bridge, is staging a New Year’s Eve Party on the 31st of December which will feature a gourmet buffet, live music and cabaret, and the requisite fireworks display.
Other top spots to herald the coming of 2020 on New Year’s Eve include the Shangri-La Hotel, Rachamankha Hotel and Le Méridien Hotel. Le Méridien’s Grand Convention Hall will be the setting for a dine and disco New Year’s Eve gala party while the Shangri-La’s gala dinner and celebration is themed on a water circus. At the Rachamankha, the hospitality team promise a New Year countdown party to usher out 2019 in style.
Advance reservations for the public events at the Three Kings’ Monument and CentralFestival are not needed. Hotels and restaurants with New Year parties say advance bookings are essential.
