Chiang Mai Named One Of The Top Asia Locations To Retire To

A recent report from prestigious media outlet US News and World Report placed Chiang Mai in the top 10 of retirement destinations in Asia. For the article, US News weighed up the pros and cons, especially those related to affordability, of its top picks. In addition to Chiang Mai, the elite collection included the Thai seaside resort of Hua Hin plus Da Nang and Da Lat in Vietnam.

In the article’s assessment of Chiang Mai, the author, Kathleen Peddicord, began by noting the northern Thai city had enticed expats for the past 200 years with an enchanting fusion of history, culture and delightful weather. She carried on by saying an affordable cost of living, quality medical care and diverse shopping had added to the reasons why more and more people were choosing to spend their golden years in Chiang Mai.

Ms Peddicord backed up her claims by explaining the 700-year-old city walls and a plethora of temples were a living testament to Chiang Mai’s history and culture. Expounding, she added that 21st century Chiang Mai’s shopping hotspots ranged from traditional markets to swanky mega-malls and that imported deli items and groceries were easily found. Finishing off, she said visiting a doctor only cost $US20 (THB620) and a couple living together could survive comfortably on $US1,200 (THB37,000) a month.

As a codicil, the article stated that the only blight on the horizon of retirement in Chiang Mai was air pollution at the height of the hot season between mid-February and April. The pollution comes in the form of smoke and is blamed on farmers in the north, as well as neighbouring countries, burning stubble in their fields. This What’s Up webpage lists the top 10 reasons as to why Chiang Mai is now such a popular destination for retirees and modern-day travellers.
