Chiang Mai’s North Gate Jazz Co-Op will be staging a special rainy season music session this coming Saturday, the 17th August. Billed as Route 11, the city’s premium live music venue will feature an avant garde band line-up on the big night. The entertainment is set to kick off at 20:30 and will continue until late with a total of three bands playing sets.
Bangkok based Maitoy will start with an eclectic collection of tunes ranging in styles from R&B to psych-pop. An hour later, contemporary jazz band Scoutland will be on stage and at 22:30, North Gate and Thapae East regulars Ong-Or will round off the evening with a fusion of alt-jazz and exciting polka numbers. Like Maitoy, Scoutland are a Bangkok ensemble made up of core member, and guitar virtuoso, Napan Pichakool’s musician friends.
Ong-Or take their name from a popular Chiang Mai culinary delicacy, a kind of pattie, made from pork, chilli and herbs while Route 11 is the main highway northbound from Lampang to Chiang Mai. Music fans could get themselves a foretaste of both Maitoy and Scoutland’s musical prowess by heading down to Thapae East the evening before, Friday the 16th, as the bands will be playing there as part of the Route 11 Roadshow.
