Due to Chiang Mai’s warmer than average climate, visiting markets during the day can be a little tiring. This is especially true when the temperature is 35°C or more during the March to May hot season. For this reason, night markets are an essential feature in Asian cities ranging from Karachi to Jakarta. Chiang Mai boasts a good assortment of night markets at which a unique range of handicrafts, souvenirs and food are on offer.
Chiang Mai Night Bazaar and Kalare Night Market are on opposite sides of Chang Klan Road. Vendors in the two markets and on Chang Klan sell souvenirs and clothing covering everything from carved wooden frogs and motorcycles to T-shirts and jeans. Anusarn Night Market is a few minutes south on Chang Klan and another great spot to pick up souvenirs and handicrafts.
The Saturday and Sunday walking street markets are outlets for Chiang Mai’s cottage handicraft industries and sell the likes of clothing fashioned from mor hom cloth, wood carvings, jewellery and homemade toys. Outdoor cafés and vendors at these two markets plus the Kalare and Anusarn markets sell Thai food and drinks. On Wednesdays, Kad Farang in Hang Dong is the venue for a market selling souvenirs, clothing and snacks. In addition to these, Chiang Mai also boasts a collection of traditional day markets include Warorot Market, Chinatown and Muang Mai Market. Details of the most popular Chiang Mai night markets are shown below.

A visit to Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is on the agenda of just about every out-of-town visitor. The main Night Bazaar building is on Chang Klan Road and is set amid a larger shopping area in which the Kalare Night Market is the other prominent feature. Stallholders in and around the Night Bazaar stock a huge range of T-shirts, shorts, trousers, belts, watches, shoes, silver jewellery, lacquerware, pewter products, DVDs, wood carvings, soap carvings, ornamental candles, wooden games and gimmicky toys. Bargaining over prices is de rigueur. The Night Bazaar is where the city’s illustrious portrait artists hang out. These skilled artists can do a live sitting or recreate an image from a photograph. A proportion of the Night Bazaar shops and stalls are open during the day and the rest open up around 18:00.

Kalare Night Market is an atmospheric food and shopping centre across the other side of Chang Klan Road from the Night Bazaar. The range of souvenirs, clothing and other items is similar to that of the Night Bazaar and detailed above. The Kalare centre is also a good spot to enjoy a meal or a glass of beer while watching live entertainment. The dining experience here is akin to that in Thai shopping malls. This requires diners to buy coupons and then go and choose what they want to eat from the outlets surrounding the dining area. The choice at the Kalare is varied and ranges from seafood dishes to Thai favourites like fried rice, khao soi egg noodle and curry soup, and mango and sticky rice desserts. There are also outlets serving up Middle Eastern specialities and Indian curries. Dancers in traditional costumes serenade diners.

Anusarn Market is on the same road as the Night Bazaar, but about 200-metres south. Anusarn Market is also a combined shopping and dining location. A full assortment of handicrafts, music CDS, fashion clothing, hand-crafted jewellery and accessories is available both in Anusarn Market and outside on Chang Klan Road. Dining is another facet of Anusarn discerning foodies will love. There are seafood restaurants and food stalls offering the likes of satay barbecue sticks and tom yam gung (spicy prawn soup), plus the ever-popular O’Malley’s Irish Bar & Restaurant to choose from. In one corner, traditional Thai and foot massages are administered by skilled masseuses.

After the main building at Warorot Market shuts up shop for the day in the late afternoon, the streets outside are transformed into market. This is at its busiest in the middle of the evening and is a great spot to pick up fresh seasonal fruit, snacks, juices, cheap clothing and sandals. The core of the market is spread around the Chang Moi Road-Wichayanon Road junction.
